Abstract : The discrete Fourier transform and the inverse transform of a finite set of data points are derived. By relating these transforms to a 'fast Fourier transform,' it is shown how they may be used efficiently in convolving two sets of data points, digital filtering, computing lagged products, and estimating amplitude spectra. Some of the difficulties encountered in using transforms in these areas are discussed, and computation times for direct evaluation of the results are compared with those using transform methods.
