Abstract : The paper presents a theoretical discussion of how costs of outpatient medical practice might be expected to vary with the size of the group providing services. It focuses upon an element which seems to have been disregarded, the incentives facing an individual physician to keep the costs of his practice down and his work effort high. The situation becomes serious in hospital outpatient clinics. (Author)
