Abstract : The report is concerned with the communication between man and the computer systems he uses for problem solving and management planning. To bridge the gap between problem solving needs and the ability of problem solvers to write their own programs, the trend has been to create pre-packaged programs which can solve a class of problems once the pertinent data has been supplied. One impediment toward the development of better problem solving tools which will operate in conjunction with on-line computer systems is a methodology for structuring the dialogue between the problem solver and his machine. A series of generalized dialogue handling routines was programmed for a time-sharing system operating on a Scientific Data Systems computer (SDS-940). The general set of routines is called the Command Package. The Command Package is then used in several different applications areas drawn from mathematics, engineering and general modeling and simulation. (Author)
