Abstract : The island of Madagascar possesses one of the most unusual faunas of the world. The mammalian fauna, particularly rich in endemic forms, has generated much interest among mammalogists. Unfortunately, little research effort has been directed toward the unique native fauna. An additional factor is the effect of the large number of introduced mammals, mainly Asian species, on the native mammals, especially the endemic forms. All these factors have lent a sense of urgency to studying all aspects of the Mascarene fauna, particularly the endemic element, which is suffering from the encroachment of human over-production, habitat destruction, and the introduced species of mammals.
