Abstract : An intensive and selective survey to review the current status of medical mycology in Latin America was carried out from 19 October to 19 November 1969. The countries visited were Venezuela, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, and Mexico. Centers of competence in every phase of medical mycology were found to exist in these countries, but virtually all are one-man operations. An International Symposium on the Mycoses, sponsored by Pan American Health Organization was held in Washington, D.C., on 24-26 February 1970 and attended by over 60 investigators from the Americas and Europe. As a result of the Symposium and recommendations of the PAHO Advisory Committee on Medical Research, a permanent Coordinating Committee for the Mycoses has been appointed by PAHO to help strengthen resources in the Western Hemisphere so as to provide service, training, and research in this field. Parasitic infections have long been recognized as very important causes of morbidity and death in Latin America and the Caribbean area. As a preliminary step toward the development of a coordinated program of research and research training in this field, earlier this year the Pan American Health Organization undertook, an assessment of the capability of the principal centers at which research and training in parasitology are being carried on in tropical America.
