Abstract : Attempts to grow single crystals of zircon (ZrSiO4) by molten salt and hydrothermal techniques are described. Crystals grown from a lithium vanadate melt were colored in various shades of blue due to small amounts of V+4 impurities. Colorless microcrystallites were obtained from open molybdate flux runs. Hydrothermal zircon growth feasibility was established in 3M KF mineralizer at 575 to 600C and 30,000 p.s.i. Other efforts were directed toward: (i) Obtaining accurate zircon solubility data in MoO3, PbO, and PbF2 type fluxes, (ii) Sintering of SiO2 and ZrO2 to obtain a suitable hydrothermal nutrient and (iii) Determination of pressure-temperature growth realms of ZrF4, HF, and KHF2 mineralizers.
