Abstract : The work enhances the applicability of Mossbauer spectroscopy on single crystal specimens. Measurements were made on the following samples; Fe foils, alpha-Fe2O3 powder, Fe powder and single crystals of sodium nitroprusside. Experiments on these samples were done using both the 14 keV gamma-ray and the 6 keV x-ray in scattering geometry. Aside from the effects of sample thickness, the 6 keV scattering results are the same as the ordinary transmission results. In finding the intensity ratios of spectral lines in the same spectrum, it is important to include thickness effects. Each line has associated with it, its own effective thickness. This phenomenon is explained. It is shown that scattering results can be used to obtain the effective field parameters in single crystals of thickness effects are included and carefully grown and cut crystals are used. A computational procedure is presented that is particularly suited to single crystal work. (Author)
