Abstract : Basically there are two approaches to the design of control systems. One approach is to propose a given form of the control algorithm or strategy, and then determine the numerical values of the parameters that give the 'best' control according to some performance criterion. This is a parameter optimization problem which yields what is commonly called a suboptimal controller. The second approach is to determine the optimal function to be used as the control algorithm or strategy. This is a functional optimization problem which yields an optimal controller. The purpose of this article is to compare the performance of linear optimal and suboptimal controllers on four different formulations of the control problems for a given linear system. (Author)
