Abstract : The present paper deals with the stability of an incompressible plane plasma sheet flow in linear approximation. The normal mode method had shown that, in the case of homogeneous boundary conditions, inhomogeneities of the plasma can lead to instabilities. Here, the effect of a parabolic velocity is examined in the low-dissipation limit. The behavior of such a plasma sheet flow is characterized by a characteristic number in the same way as the behavior of an ordinary fluid is determined by its Reynolds number. This characteristic number is the ratio of the conservative forces to the dissipative forces. The flow is stable, when the dissipative forces are predominant. If, however, the conservative forces are predominant, then a plasma behaves unlike an ordinary fluid without a magnetic field. (Author)
