Abstract : The following four areas of research are summarized: (1) the improvement of existing techniques and the development of novel methods for studying air-borne ultrasound; (2) acoustic aspects of echolocation in bats, especially a quantitative taxonomic survey of emitted signal patterns and their changes with behaviour; (3) a study of the newly discovered ultrasonic social communication in rodents and (4) studies of ultrasonic signals emitted by other groups of animals, especially by tittigonid grasshoppers and certain nocturnal moths.
