Abstract : An analysis was made of airborne, X-band, high-resolution radar data taken under conditions of low grazing angle and a moderately rough sea. The two principal areas which have been investigated are: (a) the possible temporal nonstationarity of the radar data, and (b) the use of the chi-square family of distributions as a possible fit to the first-order probability distribution of the data. In the first area it was found that, for a 2-min period, the upwind data appeared to be the most random (i.e., stationary) for both vertical and horizontal polarizations, with the time trends in the other cases being relatively minor. In the second area it was found that an excellent fit for vertical polarization is obtained by using the chi-square distribution, where the mean and variance of the data are matched to that of the theoretical distribution.
