Abstract : Ceramic BaTiO3 was successfully employed as a passive monitoring device for pulsed electric fields in the 1,000,000 to 10 to the 7th power V/m range and for pulse durations as short as 20 ns. An initially unpolarized BaTiO3 ceramic disk was subjected to the pulsed E-field. The pulsed E-field produced a net spontaneous polarization in the material. The magnitude of this polarization could be correlated with the magnitude of the E-field. The polarizations thus produced are typically of the order of several percent of saturation polarization. Once polarized, the material is piezoelectric. The piezoelectric output of the disk could be easily measured by applying a pressure of about 40 lb on the specimen and measuring the charge induced by pressure with an electrometer. (Author)
