Abstract : Systematic studies are reported of polarographic maxima observed in the reduction of Cu(II) in non-complexing electrolytes. Current-vs.-time curves and direct observation of solution streaming were used to investigate the effect of concentration of depolarizer and of supporting electrolyte, of rate of mercury flow, and of the addition of maximum suppressors. It appears that current-vs.-time behavior enables distinction of first and second-kind maxima, and that this behavior is a much more sensitive indicator of solution streaming than is the shape of the polarographic curve. Some observations cast doubt on the validity of the clear-cut distinction previously made between maxima of the first and second kind; this matter needs to be further studied with potentiostatic control of the electrode potential.
