Abstract : Prediction of the depth to which the ground freezes and thaws is necessary to develop effective means of water and thermal amelioration for open-pit mining of mineral resources and agriculture. They are also required as a basis for procedures to be used in the construction of above-ground buildings and underground communications. These predictions are made with respect to the following areas: By means of direct observations made under similar conditions (or according to data from observations of the ground temperature); Calculation methods. The maximum depth of seasonal thawing sometimes is defined as the limit of sharp variation of the ice inclusions in the soil, that is, by studying the cryogenic structure of the ground. (Author)
