Abstract : The measurement of the water content of snow using radioactive isotopes is based on the principle of measurement of the attenuation of the flux of gamma rays by the snow cover from a source situated beneath the snow cover. As the source it is possible to use some radioactive matter with a long half-life usually Co60, so that the intensity of its radiation in the course of several winter months can be considered constant. The radiation intensity is measured by special counters and scalers controlling electromechanical counters. (Author)
