Abstract : A brief description of a high resolution scanning Raman spectrometer which was constructed under the project is given. It is a 2-meter focal length Czerny Turner monochomator, which employs a ruled echelle with 300 lines/mm and blazed at 63 deg 26 min. The possible use of microwave and radio frequency fields for producing higher intensities of radiation by Hg vapor was investigated in the early stages of the project. The general theory of contours of unresolved Raman bands for spherical tops and symmetric tops was investigated under this project. High speed computer programs were written for calculating and plotting Raman bands at any chosen resolution for spherical and symmetric top molecules. (Author)
