Abstract : Theoretical studies have been made of the normal photodetection process, of the attenuation of electromagnetic wave trains passing through media suitable for photodetection, and of the behavior of photosensitive atoms in the presence of very intense electromagnetic fields. The process of two-photon absorption by single atoms was related to the correlation functions describing the propagating electromagnetic field. The dependence of spontaneous emission on the separation of radiating atoms was determined. The effect of an expanding laser cavity on enclosed radiation was studied. The problems of rotating spin systems and of the statistics of parametrically coupled oscillators were analyzed. (Author)
