Abstract : Studies were conducted on the mechanism of sleep. The subject of sleep has attracted increased attention among physiologist and is now an active area of investigation. Thirty-four publications have resulted and others are in process. They have contributed to the now generally accepted stages of sleep as identified by the brain wave, and to the localization of brain structures involved in sleep. The role of biochemical changes in these brain structures has been initiated. The role of serotonin in sleep has been explored. The effect of changes in sleep pattern to learning has been reported. The implication of these and other aspects of sleep physiology are opening up new ways to evaluate the effects of stress and fatigue. (Author)
