Abstract : The bubble size distribution in a flow is obtained by measuring light energy scattered from a bubble. A laser beam is passed through the test section at an angle of 60 deg to the flow direction. On the opposite side of the test section a receiver, composed of lenses and slits, discriminates a small volume of the laser beam. Bubbles flowing through this volume scatter light into the receiver. A photomultiplier tube converts the light into an electric pulse. The pulse height is proportional to bubble size. The pulse are shaped, counted, and grouped according to their height by a pulse height analyzer. After a predetermined time the number of bubbles versus size is displayed on an oscilloscope or x-y plotter. The system has measured bubbles in the range of 0.005 to 0.04 inches. Optimizing the operating angle and reducing noise should allow measurement in the range of 0.001 inch. (Author)
