Abstract : A UHF (1520 MHz) telemetry system for use with high altitude, gun-launched research probes and standard spinning shells is described. The major components of the projectile telemeter are designed as cylindrical modular plug-in units in order to meet a variety of instrumentation requirements for gun probe experiments and in-flight projectile performance monitoring. The special, ruggedized components and the techniques for pre-flight high acceleration testing are described. The components described include: broadband, omnidirectional antennas for front and rear mounting on a projectile; a high gain, all polarization, fan beam receiving antenna; highly stabilized, high efficiency UHF transmitters; miniaturized voltage controlled oscillators; 8 and 16 channel commutators; button cell battery packs; and modular assembly cases. The UHF telemetry receiving and recording station and the antenna radiation pattern and efficiency measurement facilities are also described. The physical and electrical characteristics of the components of the telemetry system are presented along with laboratory test data and field performance data obtained from standard 155 mm spinning projectile rounds fired between August 1968 and September 1969.
