Abstract : A radiation gage capable of measuring total radiant energy extending from UV to far IR regions of the spectrum as emitted by gases heated to extremely high temperature (15,000K) has been developed. The fast response, less than one microsecond, and the high sensitivity have been achieved by employing a thin film resistance thermometer as the sensing element. A uniquely chosen geometry allows all radiant energy incident on the entrance opening to be fully absorbed by the internal walls of the gage. The report describes the principles of operation and the basic design. The application to measurements of radiant emission of shock heated gases in shock tubes is also presented. (Author)
