Abstract : The Pao and Miles analyses of the two-dimensional steady flow of a density-stratified incompressible fluid over a barrier of nominally semi-circular cross section were extended to include the effect of a special sinusoidal shear superimposed on their essentially uniform upstream flow. The results are presented in the form of streamline contours together with a few illustrative velocity profiles. As compared to the case with an essentially uniform upstream flow, if the sinusoidal shear is such as to decrease the upstream flow near the ground, then the amplitudes of the downstream waves decrease; if the shear increases the upstream flow near the ground, then the downstream waves are amplified.
