Abstract : The potential toxicological hazards of MK IV Chemical Mace were studied to provide information for those who must decide whether this weapon should be adopted by Federal and Military law enforcement agencies. Based on the doses used, the following are concluded. (1) The MK IV Chemical Mace formulation is immediately irritating to the eyes and skin. (2) Prolonged contact of the material with eye and skin tissues could cause opacity or scarring of the corneal surface and scarring of the skin. (3) The material is a highly potent depilatory, but it does not prevent the regrowth of hair. (4) Intratracheal injection of liquid droplets of the Mace formulation causes damage to the trachea. (5) When the Mace liquid is sprayed on clothing that is in contact with the skin and not removed within a short time, skin irritation is enhanced. (6) Ocular and cutaneous exposures to the Mace formulation do not cause systemic effects. (Author)
