Abstract : A conceptual design study was made to determine the feasibility of a large cargo handling boom with master-slave controls having spatial correspondence and force feedback. Commercial devices of this type have been built which handle loads of up to 800 pounds at a reach of 16 feet. This study indicates that it is feasible to apply this technology to machines capable of handling loads ranging from 2,500 to 7,500 pounds at reaches from 15 to 25 feet. These machines offer significant potential advantages over conventional cargo and material handling equipment. (Author)
