Abstract : The Time-Span of Discretion model advanced by Elliot Jaques as a new analytical tool and method of measuring responsibility attracted considerable attention when first presented. This may be ascribed to the potential practical value of a generally applicable method for assessing the work demands of high-level positions in large-scale organizations. The report critically surveys subsequent developments both in research and application, and assesses the potential value of the time-span instrument for personnel selection and evaluation and for organizational development and planning purposes.
