Abstract : A zero degree Czochralski sapphire has been deformed in tensile creep at 1600-1800C, and fine-grained alumina polycrystals have been deformed under hydrostatic confining pressures at 1000-1200C, in order to activate non-basal slip. Deformation in both cases is thought to have involved pyramidal slip (((-1)102) plane). Activation of this slip system, together with basal and prismatic plane slip, allows the von Mises criterion to be satisfied. In addition, 'water weakening' was observed to occur in the deformation of polycrystalline alumina under hydrostatic confining pressures. (Author)
