Abstract : The influence of valence-conduction band inversion upon the electrical properties of the Pb(1-x)Sn(x)Se semiconducting alloys was investigated. It is shown theoretically that the band inversion phenomenon first proposed by Dimmock, Melngailis, and Strauss should affect the electrical properties of these alloys. A preliminary but major part of the research dealt with the controlled preparation and characterization of the Pb(1-x)Sn(x)Se alloys in both film and bulk crystalline forms. The apparatus and methods developed and employed for these purposes are discussed in detail. In addition, the electrical, magnetic, and cryogenic equipment used in the measurement of the electrical resistivity and Hall coefficient are discussed. (Author)
