Abstract : Because the surface currents of the Black Sea vary with the seasons of the year, five typical periods are singled out; namely: (1) December-February, (2) March-May, (3) June-July, (4) August-September, and (5) October-November. During December-February the current runs counterclockwise within a 50-mile wide coastal belt, affecting also the central parts of the sea. The speed of the main current is about 8-9 cm/sec., in the eastern and western central sectors only 2 cm/sec. During March-May period the currents intensify, reaching 10 cm/sec. in the coastal belt and 4-6 cm/sec. in the central parts. During June-July the current pattern becomes more complex, especially in the central parts of the sea. The speed of the main current along the coast reaches 15-18 cm/sec. During August-September the current pattern continues to become more complex, forming two large cyclonic circulations in the western and eastern parts of the Black Sea. (Author)
