Abstract : A coordinated single-unit and mediational S-R formulation is proposed to account for comparative and developmental differences in two types of discrimination-shift paradigms involving reversal behavior. In this single unit model stimulus control is exerted directly by external stimuli while in the mediational model, stimulus control is exerted by an implicit conceptual-representation response. The single-unit model accounts for infra-human behavior while the mediational formulation accounts for the behavior of college students. The probability that a child's choice will fit one formulation or the other is investigated. (Author)
