Abstract : The paper presents a coerciveness inequality for a class of nonelliptic firstorder matrix partial differential operators of the form Lambda = i E(x) sup(1) Summation, j= 1 to n of (A sub j) (D sub j). Here x=(x sub 1, x sub 2, ..., x sub n) epsilon (R sup n), (D sub j) = partial derivative with respect to j and E(x), A sub 1, A sub 2, ..., A sub n are m x m Hermitian matrices with the properties that A sub 1, A sub 2, ..., A sub n are constant, E(x) is uniformly positive definite on R sup n and E(x) and the derivatives (D sub 1) E(x), (D sub 2) E(x), ..., (D sub n) E(x) are continuous and bounded on R sup n.
