Abstract : A procedure is outlined to determine the proper geometry of anisotropic and laminated cylinders such that elastic stress gradients can be reduced to a predetermined limit. The approach consists of combining a modified plane strain elasticity solution with shell theory. Parametric studies on materials possessing high and low degrees of anisotropy indicate general guidelines for proper tube geometry for precise characterization under simulated laboratory loading and clamping conditions.
