Abstract : A decrease in the isotropic hyperfine splitting constant A and the introduction of an anisotropic term B occurs when atomic silver is adsorbed on a silica gel or porous glass surface. A theoretical analysis is given relating these hyperfine shifts to the electrostatic field F across the adsorbed atom. Based on sigma A, the shift in the isotropic hyperfine constant, a value of F = 6 X 10 to the 7th V/cm is obtained. A much higher value is obtained from the inherently more complex and uncertain B route. Details of the method are given, and its potential applicability to other systems is indicated. This work is part of a study of the effects of an electric field on catalytic and electrocatalytic reactions. (Author)
