Abstract : The report discusses the feasibility of achieving high strength in metals and nonmetallic materials by means of reinforcement with whiskers. Also discussed are some problems of the theory of strengthening of composite materials by means of discrete whiskers and some technological problems associated with production of whisker-reinforced composite materials. A detailed analysis is presented, based on Soviet and foreign literature data, analysis is presented, based on Soviet and foreign literature data, of the mechanical properties of metallic and nonmetallic whiskers, of the size effect, of the stress-strain diagrams, of the effect of alloying, and of high-temperature properties. On the basis of an analysis of the above properties, it is concluded that reinforcement of metallic and nonmetallic matrices with whiskers is a quite feasible and very promising method of strengthening metals and alloys, although some complex technological problems are still unsolved. Insofar as they have the best mechanical properties, sapphire, silicon-carbide and aluminum-nitride whiskers are the most promising materials for reinforcement of metals and for obtaining high-strength composite materials.
