Abstract : A pyrolysis-gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer system was used to analyse the products from the pyrolysis of a polyimide and certain perfluoroalkylene-linked polyimides in an inert atmosphere. The major primary degradation products were carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide; in addition large amounts of silicon tetrafluoride were produced, as a secondary product, by pyrolysis of the fluorine-containing materials. Thermal decomposition schemes consistent with the formation of these products are proposed. Results obtained with model compounds suggest that perfluoroalkylene groups have a more pronounced effect on the electron-impact behaviour of the imide ring than on its thermal breakdown. (Author)
