Abstract : Sixteen recreational boat fire and explosion casualties occurring during the summer of 1970 were thoroughly investigated by two Coast Guard Officers. The cases studied were screened and selected based on preliminary information received from Coast Guard field units located at the scene of the casualties. The study includes cases from all parts of the Continental United States and covered a wide variety of gasoline-powered boats. The report does not identify specific cases by name, manufacturer, location, or time. A probabilistic approach is suggested as an analytical tool with tables demonstrating this technique provided. These tables show that, of the sample studied, the boats' fuel storage system contributed to the cause of the fire or explosion casualty 48% of the time. (Author)
