Abstract : The present research project is concerned with an experimental-theoretical study of the magneto-optical properties of poly-crystalline and single-crystal ferromagnetic thin films, and an investigation of the spin-wave spectrum and the spin-Raman effect in Yttrium Iron Garnet. The work also includes a continuation of the projects from the previous grant, involving magnetoresistance measurements on ferromagnetic films and transport phenomena in p-n junctions. The effort on the research phase involving magneto-optical effects has consisted, during the past year, mainly of the implementation of the required experimental set-ups. The studies involving the anisotropies in the magnetoresistance measurements on ferromagnetic thin films have been completed, and as well as providing new data regarding the magnetoresistivity coefficients have also resolved some of the apparently anomalous results obtained by previous investigators. The theoretical aspects of these studies have also provided more general solutions of the Boltzmann transport equation for conduction in thin films. The work on p-n junction has provided evidence governing relationships between the nature of the mobility of electrons in the space-charge region of the junction and the width of that junction.
