Abstract : The broad objectives of the program were to carry to conclusion a long-term (six-year) research program on the properties of silicon and germanium and alkali-halide scintillation detectors as x-ray detectors; to expand knowledge about these kinds of materials; and to increase opportunity for practical applications. A particular application that was studied in detail involved the construction and flight of a prototype germanium spectrometer for x-ray observations in space physics. The report summarizes the work actually performed and the new directions and applications that resulted from the work, and concludes that the objectives of the originally proposed research were satisfactorily accomplished.
