Abstract : Tests were conducted to investigate (a) flow conditions and maximum bottom velocities downstream of a trapezoidal gate still without stilling basin; (b) the relative merits of a parabolic gate sill with a roller bucket energy dissipator and a parabolic gate sill with a stilling basin consisting of a horizontal apron terminated by a sloping end sill; and (c) the stability of a horizontal protective stone blanket downstream of the most practical energy dissipator. The trapezoidal gate sill permitted separation of the nappe from the gate sill and an undesirable flow condition termed an undulating jet which created high bottom velocities and objectionable surface waves in the exit channel. Therefore, the use of such a sill and the possibility of eliminating stilling basins at certain low-head dams on the Arkansas River were eliminated from further consideration. (Author)
