Abstract : A prosthetic hybrid system consisting of an above elbow prosthesis containing an externally-powered electromechanical hand and a conventional mechanical elbow was functionally evaluated. Two different means of controlling the terminal device were provided. The hand was first controlled by EMG signals, and then with a pull-type switch connected in-line with the fair-lead cable control. The results indicated that in a relatively short period of time, an amputee could operate the experimental prosthesis with a high degree of proficiency. Of the two types of controls, it appeared that the amputees had greater confidence in the pull-type switch than the EMG control. (Author)
