Abstract : The objectives of this program are to design, fabricate, and evaluate a plasma-panel display device having a three-color capability, and to investigate and develop a technique for operating such a device with at least three levels of intensity. The vacuum-ultraviolet excitation spectra of 10 oxygen-dominated phosphors were measured to assist the selection of those most readily excited by the ultraviolet emission from a Xenon plasma discharge. A phosphor deposition technique involving the use of a thermally tackifiable photo-polymer was extended to the preparation of multi-color panels. An appropriate thermal cycle was established for pyrolysis of the photo-polymer and attachment of phosphor spots to the dielectric surface as dots or donuts. Means for achieving good electrode/phosphor alignment have been identified, and progress has been made in control of registration during panel sealing. The addressability of three intensity levels over large areas of a standard monochrome plasma display panel was demonstrated. (Author)
