Abstract : Various concentrations of serum and carbon dioxide were tested for their effects on the growth of strain L929 during the first 48 hours after subculture. Three different combinations of the two constituents produced: (a) cell loss followed by a burst of mitosis, (b) a lag period followed by steady growth, or (c) rapid growth followed by rapid cell loss. The balance of the two factors was always more important than the absolute amount of either one. Growth did not correlate directly with pH changes in the medium. (Author)
