Abstract : The requirements of a Computer Aided Learning System which would be a reasonable assistant to the teacher are discussed. These ideas are implemented in a system entitled RASCAL, a Rudimentary Adaptive System for Computer Aided Learning. RASCAL replaces prepared frames used in previous systems with a description of questions to be asked and a tree of alternatives that might be helpful in assisting a student in answering a question. The actual questions are generated as a function of the system's interaction with a student, as is the selection of the branch to follow in aiding the student. The results obtained to date, while not extensive in their scope, indicate that a system such as RASCAL can be useful in the classroom. (Author)
