Abstract : A technique was developed to successfully launch conical ballistics range models which are preheated to 500F and then launched at velocities of up to 5200 feet per second. The model is heated at the base by an electrical heater, while the sabot serves as a thermal insulator. The sabot utilizes a copper sleeve at the inner wall to provide a near-uniform temperature along the model surface. It was demonstrated that the surface temperature gradient from tip to base of the model was less than 30F. (Author)
