Abstract : Initial studies for a Metering and Spacing system (M + S) concept to be implemented are reported. These include statistical analyses of errors between computed (i.e., planned) aircraft path and time-to-fly and actual performance as affected by pilot response, wind, etc.. A geometry is developed so that for each aircraft path length can be altered to adjust time of arrival at the runway threshold so as to maintain safe spacing, to compensate for errors occurring prior to arrival at the ILS gate leading to the runway, to provide a buffer spacing prior to the gate and to provide gaps to implement the commanded ratio of departures to arrivals. The geometry developed, together with a Geometry Compiler being developed, provides a minimum number of speed and turn commands to pilots, and a program readily adapted to many airports which differ in layout and geographic configuration of the controlled terminal area.
