Abstract : The reaction of trialkylaluminum and gallium with (3)-1,2-B9C2H13 has been shown to produce two series of derivatives: 1,2-B9C2H12MR2 and 1,2-B9C2H11MR (M = Al, R = CH3, C2H5; M = Ga, R = C2H5). The former have been shown to be tautomeric nido compounds containing bridging MR2 groups, presumably attached through B-H-M bridges. The later series of derivatives are closo compounds; substituted homologs of the icosahedral 1,2-B10C2H12 carborane. The thermal rearrangement of the latter compounds to the corresponding 1,7-derivatives, degradation, catalytic properties and derivative chemistry are discussed. (Author)
