Abstract : Pattern recognition is an essential part of artificial intelligence, and has been the subject of extensive research. The report gives a survey of the literature on pattern recognition. The survey is divided into two main parts, the first part devoted to statistical pattern recognition, and the second part devoted to pictorial pattern recognition. With the partial exception of waveform recognition, almost all of the work in pattern recognition falls into one or the other of these two categories. The bibliography includes more than 500 references. (Author)
