Abstract : An improved statistical model for electrons in atoms is developed based on an expansion of the one-electron Green's function in spherical harmonics. Improved results in the total energies and electron densities near the nucleus, as compared with the Thomas-Fermi model, are obtained. The model is generalized to include relativistic effects. An improved treatment including retardation effects of surface plasmon dispersion relations, and of the transmission and reflection coefficients for light incident on a semi-infinite plasma, is given. An exact method for solution of a system of coupled differential equations with periodic coefficients is discussed and applied to electromagnetic wave propagation through a gas of spins, and to the Bloch equations for a magnetic moment in an oscillating magnetic field.
