Abstract : An attempt is made to obtain order-of-magnitude estimates of the radiant intensity profiles for the precursor region of a gas, ahead of a hypervelocity shock wave. An approximate expression for the temperature distribution in the precursor is derived for the case where gamma is very large. The parameter, gamma, appears in the nondimensionalization of the flow equations. The importance of radiative heat transfer relative to convective heat transfer is characterized by the size of gamma. The approximation for the temperature is then used to predict the radiant intensity profile in the precursor for a specific example. The values of the parameters used for the calculation were chosen from a prior experiment in which the profile was measured. (Author)
