Abstract : The Gilfillan Integral Air Traffic Control Radar Beacon Directional Antenna was tested to determine the characteristics of this antenna. The experimentation consisted of determining (1) free space patterns of Sum and Difference Channels; (2) side lobe levels of the sum pattern and null level of the difference pattern; (3) correlation of the vertical lobing structure of the sum and difference patterns; and, (4) operational checks with and without 3-Pulse Side Lobe Suppression. The Integral Directional Antenna received targets out to a range of 200 miles, provided that the aircraft was at line-of-sight altitude. Partial video ring-around occurred, with 3-Pulse Side Lobe Suppression and no Sensitivity Time Control, at a range of three to five miles from the ground site and complete video ring-around occurred when the aircraft was overhead, as compared to no ring-around with the 28-foot FA-7201 antenna.
