Abstract : Numerical solutions - of the property coupled, parabolic system of partial differential equations representing conservation of mass, momentum and thermal energy - were obtained for a flow of gases in circular tubes, annuli, and between parallel plates. Circular tube predictions were verified in the laboratory. Experiments were also conducted with tubes of rectangular cross-section. In all cases, the effects of gas property variation on heat transfer parameters are slight but the predictions of wall friction are modified substantially. The studies were extended to include low Reynolds number turbulent flow, high Reynolds number turbulent flow of gases with strong property variation, and transition of high molecular eight polymer solutions.
